Tea Time Treasures: A Taste of the Caribbean at AGO’s Grange

In Toronto lies The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), renowned for its art rather than its cuisine. During my visit, I indulged in Afternoon Tea at the Grange, hosted in the Norma Ridley Members’ Lounge situated at the southern end of the AGO.

The ambiance exudes a quintessentially British charm, setting the stage for a delightful experience. The affair commences with a pot of tea elegantly presented in fine china. Patrons are offered a choice from an impressive array of nine flavorful teas, ranging from delicate and sweet to exquisitely scented blends.

Among these, I recommend trying my personal favourite, Rouge Provence, a delightful fusion of South African Red Rooibos with French Florals and Berries. Its light, fruity essence evokes memories of vibrant summer afternoons.

Rather than the conventional bite-sized sandwiches, guests are treated to a curated selection of delicacies served on a three-tiered tray. Two preset menus are available—one vegetarian and the other regular—each featuring an assortment of delectable treats inspired by Caribbean and British cuisines. Drawing influences from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Barbados, and the UK, the menu promises a culinary journey like no other.

Initially skeptical, I was pleasantly surprised as each morsel surpassed my expectations. The tropical flavours of guava, coconut, mango, and breadfruit tantalized my taste buds, while the sweets proved to be decadently delicious. The chef’s expertise shone through as the natural flavours burst into my mouth, leaving me craving for more.

The Afternoon Tea experience was complemented by the ongoing exhibition “Life Between Islands: Caribbean-British Art 1950s-Now,” debuting from December 6th, 2023, to April 1st, 2024. This exhibition showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Caribbean, spanning decades of artistic expression and celebrating the vibrancy, solidarity, and creativity inherent in this legacy.

For those yearning for a taste of the islands, the Norma Ridley Members’ Lounge welcomes all to indulge in Afternoon Tea. Reservations are required, and the experience runs from November 18, 2023, to December 17, 2023, with seatings available Wednesday through Sunday at 11:30 am, 12:00 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:00 pm. Pricing is set at $95 + tax and gratuity per adult and $45 + tax and gratuity per child (10 and under), inclusive of general admission to the gallery for all guests.

Transporting me back to the Islands, this experience was nothing short of nostalgic—a true culinary and cultural delight.
